Category: accessible Devices
Hi everyone,
I currently own a Nokia 6682 (I know, I'm behind) with talks, but am thinking of getting a new phone. I have a few preferences/questions though, and was wondering if I could get some tips from people more phone-savy than I.
1. I'm looking for a flip phone. These bar phones are just too clunky for my liking.
2. It needs to be sym-card accessible (so a GSM phone, as I'd like to remain with my phone service provider)
3. Talks vs. Mobile speak? I haven't seen a comparison on this board, but maybe I didn't search far back enough. Are there any people who've used them both? in what (noticeable) ways do they differ?
Thanks a lot guys!
You might want to check out www.accessiblephones.com You can narrow your search down by carrier or by whether it's a flip phone or not. The first flip phone that popped into my head that works with Talks is the Nokia N75; but definitely do some research. I had that phone, and I didn't like it.
Thanks! I'll definitely check out that site. May I ask why you didn't like the N75?
I'm not Brooke, obviously, but I've seen the phone in question. While it is a flip phone, it's a rather large and somewhat bulky flip phone. IT also seems to be a bit more breakable than some flipphones I've seen. I've also heard the battery time on it isn't the greatest (from a friend that has one.) But Brooke can probably tel you more as she's owned one. Those are just things I've picked up in passing.
Honestly, for flip phones, you're not going to find many that are accessible. I'd suggest at least widening your search to slider phones as well, though even then there aren't that many that also will use talks or the various types of mobile speak.
nice slider phone is the E66. i think thats one of the best i have seen in awhile,
as for the n75 all the keys are one joint mass as you go across the phone.
talx for me i just find it more closer to jaws which i suppose i am used to using now.
There really aren't many flip options. The N75 is the only one I know of, but I'm no phone guru. I have an N75. I've had it for about a year. It's OK. It's a little bulky for a flip and the battery life does indeed suck. I don't use my phone a lot and I only use it for calls. Still, I have to charge it every day. It's not a big deal because I just plug it into the charger every night before I go to bed but if you use your phone alot, especially for web browsing and such, it's probably not the phone for you. I also agree that the phone isn't very durable. The battery cover is very flimsy and pops off easily. Also, my phone broke about a month ago at the hinge. It's now only attached on one side. It still works but it's alarming to me that it broke when I didn't even drop it or anything. I'm not hard on phones so if this one can't hold up to me then it's pretty flimsy. The keypad on the N75 is all flat as someone said above, but there are distinct grooves between all the buttons and I got used to it after a couple of days. It's a non-issue to me, but it's something to keep in mind if extra tactile buttons are something you want.
As for Talks vs Mobile Speak, I've used both. I'm using MS right now. I'd say that MS is more customizable but the text to speech is much better with Talks. The speech is clearer and can go faster than on MS. Those 2 factors are very important to me and are the main reason I have never ben totally satisfied with MS. I also feel like Talks is more responsive and has fewer crashes than MS. I got MS because AT&T has it for $89, but I think on my next phone, I'll spend the extra cash and go back to Talks. MS is nice and works fine but it just bugs me.
Hope that helps. Good luck.
Hi,
I used the n75 for about a year with ms. Ms for me was very slow and sluggish. I could hit the camera and it would take forever to load the same was true with other aplications. I don't know if that was the phones fault or ms. I found it difficult to carry my phone in my pocket while using my guide dog then when receiving a call reach in my pocket and try and open it one handed. I use loadstone the free gps package for the nokias as well and I could'nt use it very well while walking either.
I switched back to my 6682 about a month ago. I love this phone, I don't know what phone I will go for next, probably the n82 cause I want the knfb reader.
.
Thanks for all the replies!!
Ok, I've decided that I'll upgrade to the n82 as well. I'd really like the knfb reader, and it seems as though flips in general are not very accessible. It's ok though, I've heard that the n82 is a sleeker phone than the somewhat bulky (but very reliable) 6682. It's just so expensive!! there's the phone itself, then the Talks software, and then the KNFB software. You end up dropping a fortune on the thing...but I suppose it's worth it. thanks again!
ah a previous poster stated texting on the n75 is harder than some. i hate tactile keys on a phone lol.
another sleek phone that works with talx is the n71 thats a nice phone.
Skyla,
I got to play with a KNFB reader at a convention. The N82 is a really sleek phone. It feels great in your hand and the buttons are highly tactile. It's not clunky at all and surprisingly small. I didn't compare them side by side, but the N82 actually felt smaller than my N75. Sounds like you're making a good choice. I'm considering switching to an N82 myself but it's hard to talk myself into parting with that much cash. I read that they're working on making the KNFB software compatible with other phones in the near future so I might wait and see what my other options are before I make my final decision.
time travelling bunny,
That's my issue as well. I have a feeling it'll be worth the cash, but there's something about dropping 500+ on a cell phone that makes me cringe (I'm a self-professed shopaholic though, so I can probably convince myself to get it nonetheless). I've heard that hte KNFB software is really helpful, but positionning the camera right takes a lot of practise and getting used to.
hi there, another phone i can recommend is the nokia n95. it's a slide phone, and if you drop it, doesn't break easily. i like the keys on it too. some may think it's not very nice because it's rather chunky, but it's small at the same time. i've been a talks user for a few years and i like it because of the jaws similarities.
The N82 looks like an awesome phone. I know some people who have it. I wanted one, but I couldn't see spending that much on a phone; but if you have the money, I think it's a good choice.
I have an N82 and agree. Great phone excellent audio quality and easy to use.
Thanks for all the responses guys. I've settled on an n82, and think I'll be pleased with it. All of your replies were helpful though. Thanks!
Hey all, I have sprint and wanted to know if there are any palm or HTC users out there? I am wanting to switch to a pocket pc phone. Let me know.
I have a palm 750W, and it's a good device but very slow compared to some of the HTC devices that I've set up! I've honestly retired my treo for a Moto Q for now and that's saying something as I much prefer the Pocket pc to the smart phone platform!
